Our Coffee
At the Kaffa workshop, we roast Kaffa wild coffee with a wealth of experience and precise craftsmanship so that every bean can develop its full aroma. Discover our various wild coffee varieties and other sustainable coffees from responsible sources—certified organic and Fair Trade. With every cup of Kaffa wild coffee, you support fair trade, local farming families, and the protection of Ethiopia’s unique rainforest.
Origin – the Kaffa Mountain Rainforest
The Kaffa Mountain Rainforest in southwestern Ethiopia is considered the cradle of Arabica coffee. Here, Coffea arabica has been growing wild in its natural habitat for millennia—at altitudes ranging from about 1,500 to 2,200 meters, surrounded by tropical biodiversity. What makes wild coffee so special?
Unlike plantation coffee, wild coffee is not cultivated—it grows naturally. The plants develop at their own pace, exhibiting genetic diversity and adapting to the conditions of the rainforest. This results in more complex flavor profiles and exceptional biodiversity that cannot be replicated in any cultivated coffee.
The Kaffa Mountain Rainforest is now recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve—and its future depends directly on whether the people who live there have economic alternatives to deforestation. Kaffa Wild Coffee provides exactly that foundation.
Sustainability and Fair Trade
Kaffa Wild Coffee – more than just a clear conscience. When you buy Kaffa Wild Coffee, you’re not just getting a sustainable coffee. You’re buying one of the world’s last true wild coffees, and in doing so, you’re directly helping to protect one of Africa’s most biodiverse rainforests. Here’s what that means in concrete terms:
- Wild, not cultivated: The coffee plants grow naturally in the Kaffa mountain rainforest—without pesticides, without artificial irrigation, and without monocultures
- Fair Value Creation: Local farming families in the Kaffa region are paid directly and fairly (Fair for Life certification by EcoCert)
- Protecting the rainforest: Every package sold contributes to the communities’ economic foundation—which helps prevent deforestation
- Certified organic: CH-BIO-004 – certified organic wild harvest
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kaffa wild coffee low in acidity?
Yes—thanks to the natural wild harvesting and careful sun-drying process, Kaffa wild coffee is exceptionally low in acidity and particularly easy to digest. It’s also ideal for people with sensitive stomachs.
What is the difference between wild coffee and regular organic coffee?
Wild coffee is not cultivated but harvested in its natural habitat. This means: no monocultures, no artificial irrigation, and maximum genetic diversity. While regular organic coffee is grown without pesticides, it still follows the plantation model. Kaffa wild coffee is therefore the most natural form of coffee there is.
What does "organic wild harvest" mean?
The certified organic wild harvest guarantees that Kaffa Wild Coffee grows wild in the pristine Kaffa mountain rainforest in Ethiopia and is harvested exclusively by registered collectors in accordance with strict organic guidelines—without fertilizers or pesticides and without disturbing the pristine rainforest. This is verified and certified through an annual audit at the source.
How is Kaffa wild coffee roasted?
We roast the wild coffee in small batches in a drum roaster at the coffee workshop in Kriens. Since wild coffee beans vary in size, a precise and closely monitored roasting process is essential to ensure consistent quality that meets our high standards.
What is Kaffa Wild Coffee best suited for?
Wildkaffee is suitable for portafilter machines, fully automatic machines, and Moka pots. For these, we recommend the darker roasts, such as Espresso or Ristretto. For drip coffee or French press, we recommend our light to medium roasts, such as Medium or Yeyibito.
How fresh is the coffee when you buy it?
The roasting date is the best-by date minus 12 months. You can find the best-by date on the packaging and subtract 12 months from it to determine the roasting date.
How do I store Kaffa wild coffee properly?
We recommend storing coffee in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not store it in the refrigerator, as coffee absorbs moisture. After opening, seal the bag tightly, for example with a clip or the built-in zipper.
What does “Fair for Life” mean?
Fair for Life is an independent Fairtrade certification system administered by Ecocert. It verifies fair working conditions, fair prices for producers, and sustainable supply chains—and is considered one of the strictest standards.
